Project: Youth Leadership Program (YLP)
Location: High school, Elementary school, and a local Wetland
Description: YLP is a cross age mentoring program that teaches students about the wonders of California’s wetlands and wildlife. CWA trains high school students to become mentors for an elementary school as they help to facilitate wetland awareness throughout their community. Mentors plan and lead a field trip for the elementary students to a local wetland. Four main events take place: 1) High school class training with CWA to obtain wetland background knowledge 2) Meet and Greet at an elementary school where mentors lead hands-on activities to teach wetland knowledge to younger students 3) Site Training day at a local wetland to prepare mentors for their field trip with the younger students 4) Marsh Madness field day at a local wetland. Mentors lead all Marsh Madness activities including wetland soils, aquatic insects, and a birding nature walk. Lunch is provided. Students can earn service learning hours and one star mentor will receive a $500 scholarship.

Description: Birthday parties are an important part of growing up. They mark progress and are the hope of a new year to come. But sadly, there are hundreds of Sacramento children living in homelessness or in emergency situations whose birthdays will pass without any celebration. Hands on Sacramento, a local volunteer organization, brings hope to these children in a unique way: Project Birthday. Our goal is to brighten and celebrate the lives of those in need by providing birthday parties and gifts to children in the Sacramento area.
