The Toby Johnson Middle School’s CyberBots Team Was One of Thousands of Participants in CyberPatriot, the Air Force Association’s Youth Cybersecurity Virtual Competition
ELK GROVE, Calif. – June 15, 2021 – The Toby Johnson Middle School’s CyberBots team ranked second place in the CyberPatriot XIII National Finals Competition, the Air Force Association’s Youth Cybersecurity competition. Held on March 19 – 21, 2021, the competition included thousands of participants from divisions for middle school students, high school students, and members of JROTC and similar programs. The Toby Johnson Middle School’s CyberBots team was one of 754 middle school teams that entered the competition and only one of three teams to advance to the national competition.
Elk Grove High School mathematics teacher, Sean McNally, brought the CyberPatriot to Elk Grove Unified in 2011. McNally says, “Toby Johnson Middle School is one of several schools in Elk Grove Unified that is intentionally positioning itself in cyber competitions to increase the level of interest in cybersecurity among our students to battle the lack of skilled workers in that industry. CyberBots Coach Ryan North and mentor George Valencia are building a dynasty of cyber warriors at Toby Johnson Middle School who will later enter the cybersecurity workforce and be protectors of intellectual property and our nation’s infrastructure.”
