Curriculum Aims to Focus on the Newly Proposed Kindergarten-5th Grade Science, Middle School Comprehensive Sexual Health, and High School Health Instructional Materials

ELK GROVE, Calif. – February 10, 2021 – The Elk Grove Unified School District invites parents and community members to preview and provide feedback on the newly proposed Kindergarten-5th grade Science, middle school Comprehensive Sexual Health, and high school Health instructional materials currently under consideration for EGUSD adoption. The District’s review process, which includes teachers piloting the proposed materials, began in October and is scheduled to be completed by March with concurrent community preview opportunities.

Proposed instructional materials for K-5th grade Science were reviewed, evaluated, and selected by the California State Board of Education. As a standalone unit of instruction rather than a course of study, comprehensive sexual health instructional materials should comply with the California Healthy Youth Act and curriculum selection guidance provided by the California State Board. Regarding 9th-12th grade materials, the California State Board of Education does not provide a recommended list of instructional materials. Once the review process is complete, in accordance with district Board Policy, District staff will compile stakeholder feedback and bring forward a recommendation to the Board of Education in March and April 2021.

Instructional materials will be available for preview on the EGUSD website through February 28, 2021. Parents and community members are welcome to provide feedback using the digital forms provided.
