Preview Days Offer Opportunity to See New Planned Curriculum and Provide Feedback

ELK GROVE, Calif. – December 9, 2019 – The Elk Grove Unified School District invites parents and community members to preview and provide feedback on the newly proposed 6th-12th grade Science and 10th-12th grade History/Social Science instructional materials currently under consideration for EGUSD adoption. The District’s review process, which includes teachers piloting the proposed materials, began in July and is scheduled to be completed by December with parent preview days to follow. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend one or more of the instructional material preview days between December and February. Proposed instructional materials for 6th-8th grade Science were reviewed, evaluated and selected by the California State Board of Education. Regarding 9th-12th grade materials, the California State Board of Education does not provide a recommended list of instructional materials. Once the review process is complete, in accordance with district Board Policy, District staff will compile stakeholder feedback and bring forward a recommendation to the Board of Education in March 2020.

Parents and Community Members are welcome to drop-in anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to review and provide feedback on the proposed instructional materials.

Instructional materials used in California public schools must comply with Education Code sections 60040-60045 and 60048 as well as the SBE guidelines in Standards for Evaluating Instructional Materials for Social Content (2013 Edition), which require the following in regard to the depiction of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in instructional materials:

  • Achievements. Whenever developments in history or current events, or achievements in art, science, or other fields are presented, the contributions of persons of gay, lesbian, or bisexual orientation, or transgender persons, particularly prominent persons, should be included and discussed when it is historically accurate to do so.
  • Proportion of portrayals. Instructional materials containing references to, or illustrations of, people must portray accurately, to the extent possible, the roles and contributions of a fair proportion of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
  • Roles. The presentation of persons of gay, lesbian, or bisexual orientation, or transgender identity, in instructional materials should not be significantly different from the portrayal of people of other sexual orientations and gender identities.

In accordance with EGUSD BP 6161.1, the review process shall involve teachers in a substantial manner and shall also encourage the participation of parents/guardians and community members. (Education Code 60002) (cf. 6020 – Parent Involvement)
