Day-Long Event Aims to Spread Awareness of Public Sector Careers to Tomorrow’s Workforce
WHAT: The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and the City of Elk Grove are co-hosting “Careers in Public Service Day” on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. With nearly 250,000 public sector workers being the backbone and anchor of the economy of the six-county Sacramento region, federal, state and local public sector agencies face challenges in developing a pipeline of future workers as current employees retire. Elk Grove Unified recognizes this challenge highlighted in a recent report by the Innovative Pathways to Public Service (IPPS).
EGUSD offers many public sector focused- Career Technical Education academies and pathways like transportation, city management, criminal justice and law and education. The “Careers in Public Service Day” supports the school district’s efforts in preparing students for college, career and life after high school while also providing students with hands-on real-world experiences to best understand what a career in the public sector means. Students will participate in informational interviews with city employees who will also provide the students with a deep-dive of the types of projects that are handled by various city departments.

WHY: To increase the awareness about public sector career opportunities to the workforce of tomorrow, IPPS is sponsoring Careers in Public Service Month to increase their awareness of diverse careers in the public sector – healthcare, cities, counties, special districts and state government.
