Paired with “Million Meals Summer,” Students Stay Nourished While School is Out
ELK GROVE, Calif. – June 5, 2019 – The Elk Grove Unified School District’s Food and Nutrition Services and local community partners will once again provide meals during the summer from June through August to children 18 years and younger. Many children go hungry during the summer when school is out, but the “Million Meals Summer” program means children will be able to eat well-balanced meals during the break. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Seamless Summer Feeding Program allows school districts to provide meals in neighborhoods with greater than 50 percent free or reduced lunch eligible populations. There are no income requirements for those who participate in the free summer meal service.
Additionally, the school district will also collaborate locally to ensure each location has adequate volunteers and/or employees to serve the nutritious meals under the guidance of EGUSD employees. Pre-packaged, cold meals are served by volunteers/employees of the partner organizations or by Food and Nutrition Services employees at all sites. Meal service typically lasts 30-60 minutes at each location during lunchtime on weekdays. One evening meal service is available on Fridays and Saturdays.
