Thundering Herd Team Also Ranks Fifth in State Competition

ELK GROVE, Calif. – March 27, 2019 – The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) happily recognizes the Elk Grove High School Mock Trial Team as this year’s champion of the Sacramento County Office of Education Mock Trial Competition. Additionally, the Thundering Herd team ranked fifth in the 38th Annual California Mock Trial Finals. Elated by the top recognition, school principal Eugene Christmas, III said, “The top recognition is a huge honor for our Mock Trial Team, student body and Elk Grove High School. I am proud of the students and faculty that worked hard to achieve first place in the region and fifth place in California. Students not only do extensive research and collaboration, they are also given the opportunity to argue their case in a courtroom setting that provides real-world and hands-on experience that is invaluable for them through their educational career.”

Since 1990, Elk Grove High School has received the first place ranking in the regional competition 17 times. The competition simulates a trial-level proceeding where students portray the roles of pre-trial counsel, prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs and jurors before a single presiding judge and two scoring judges. Volunteers from local law firms and other legal organizations serve as scoring and presiding judges for the five-day event.

The winning team from the regional competition then competes in the Constitutional Rights Foundation’s California’s Mock Trial Competition, a non-profit, non-partisan, community-based organization dedicated to educating America’s young people about the importance of civic participation in a democratic society.
