ELK GROVE, Calif. – November 14, 2018 – The wellness and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority at all of our schools. We continue to monitor the persistently poor air quality in our region and we continue to follow the recommendations from the Sacramento County Public Health Officer. The Sac Metro Air District, with County Public Health, has extended the Wildfire Smoke Statement recommendations through Friday that until air quality improves, the Public Health Officer continues to recommend that schools cancel outdoor recesses, outdoor activities and outdoor physical education (P.E.). Yesterday and today, all EGUSD school sites were instructed to cancel all outdoor activities including field trips to affected areas with outdoor activity agendas.
All district families and staff have been asked to continue to minimize smoke exposure for students when smoke is seen or smelled by staying inside with windows and doors closed.
The following benefits for being at school are:
- All sites have excellent ventilation and filtration system
- Parents don’t have to worry about daycare accommodations if they have to work
- Meals are provided at school
- Schools have plans in place when students have to be indoors
- Unlike a large college campus, students don’t have to walk long distances
- Student support services are available at the school site including health services
The following tips for children/residents and smoke have been shared with district families and staff from the Sac Metro Air District developed in coordination with Counties and local air districts:
