On Thursday, June 1, 2017, two yard duty staff at Carroll Elementary School chose to discipline eight students for having breached a recess rule by having the students sing and perform dance moves and conduct “Simple Simon” responses on a stage in view of their peers. The impact of this sort of disciplinary approach resulted in an adverse reaction by students and staff that disrupted the positive and caring campus learning environment and negatively upset students.
School staff quickly reported what had transpired in the lunchroom to school officials and site administration responded immediately to remove the staff involved, attend to the distressed students and investigate. A letter from the principal was promptly sent to the parents of the affected students and to all parents of 6th grade students to inform them about the incident that affected the students on campus and to apologize on behalf of the school stating, “This sort of disciplinary action is not something we approve of or condone at Carroll Elementary School.” While personnel matters are confidential, the employees involved have been removed from the campus and the matter is being actively addressed by District officials.
The school and District will provide social and emotional support to the affected students should they need it and the principal will meet with the yard duty staff and the teaching staff to review protocols of discipline to ensure that this type of incident is not repeated.
