Teachers and staff are helping students prepare to be college and career ready as students make incremental gains on CAASPP scores across all grade levels and in all areas.

ELK GROVE, Calif. – August 24, 2016 –Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) students outperformed their Sacramento County peers and, once again, helped to raise the bar for all students. Across all grade levels tested (grades 3-8 and 11), 53% of EGUSD students scored as standard “met” or “exceeded”  in the overall English language arts results, reflecting an increase of three percentage points compared to last year, surpassing the Sacramento County average by 8 percentage points. In math, across all grade levels tested (grades 3-8 and 11), 43% of EGUSD students scored as standard “met” or “exceeded,” reflecting an increase of two percentage points compared to last year, surpassing the Sacramento County average by 7 percentage points.

Christopher R. Hoffman, Superintendent of Elk Grove Unified schools commented, “Our students set the bar high last year and they continue to move up. Their performance progress is positive and each incremental increase demonstrates that more of our students are meeting or exceeding standards in English language arts and math. A single percentage point increase translates into hundreds of new students meeting or exceeding the standards.”

In Elk Grove Unified, the District and Statewide 2015 results established a baseline that helped inform instructional programs in English language arts and math. Once again, Elk Grove Unified leaders are at the forefront of advancing and implementing initiatives to close the achievement gap by providing direction and resources for on-going professional development, adoption of common core aligned materials and implementation of integrated mathematics.

This year, all 40 K-6 elementary schools received the new Wonders English language arts curriculum that, paired with teacher training and technology, will help all students reach higher goals. The District also is providing strategic enrichment opportunities for all students such as intersession support and summer school enrichment. Hoffman noted, “We will continue using CASSPP results as one of several academic measures we analyze to determine areas of need and guide program planning and development to support student learning.” Elk Grove Unified also believes that a successful child is a connected child. To keep students connected to school, EGUSD has also implemented an attendance improvement initiative aimed at addressing chronic absenteeism.

With the second year of CAASPP scores in, Hoffman concluded, “Thanks to all of our staff, we can help every student learn in every classroom, in every subject every day, and more importantly, we can see now that students will improve when we, the adults, get better and better at what we do toward educating.”
