Homework

Homework is an important part of the day and is given for students to practice and become better in that specific area and to teach responsibility. Homework should not be a battle. If students get frustrated, they need to take a break and try again. If they are still frustrated, please shoot me an email immediately so that I can help them the next day. I also realize that many students have activities outside of school or a situation occurs beyond your control, and homework has not been completed, please send an email immediately so that I know before they come in the next day. I am flexible, if I know the situation before the student enters our classroom.

Studies have found that students who do their homework every day and are supervised by their parents, usually progress at a much faster rate than students who do not complete their homework. Homework is assigned daily, district guidelines are 1 hour, which includes reading nightly for 20 minutes. Homework will be written down by students in their agendas. Please check agendas daily and initial that you have seen their homework. Homework will also be posted on the blog and an email sent through Synergy. If your child is not able to complete their homework, they will complete their homework during their recess time. If a student is absent, they have an extra day per each absent day to complete missed assignments. An absent folder will be set on their desk with all assignments that they have missed that day. For example, if a student is absent Monday and Tuesday, they have until Friday to turn in make-up work.

Make sure your child goes to bed at a decent hour, make sure they have a quiet place to do their homework, go over corrected work that is brought home to make sure your child is being successful, make sure they come to school everyday on time, ask them what they are learning in school, and please talk to me if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

***2 projects will be going home tomorrow in your child’s Friday folder.  Please look for them and keep the papers in a safe, but visible, place so that they do not get lost.  The CA Regions Map project is due on Monday, 10/21 and the Discover CA project is due Friday, April 17, 2020.  The extended deadline for the Discover CA gives students time to truly learn about their location and share with their classmates.  If you and your child would like to begin looking at the different locations, please go to the following links: http://ohp.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21387 (you can search historical landmarks by counties) and http://www.donaldlaird.com/landmarks/. ***I have been discussing TIME MANAGEMENT a lot since the beginning of the school year and I hope that your children are really becoming better at this. They have a lot of items due in the next couple of weeks and whether they get this done will depend upon if they have utilized their time wisely.  I understand that students have extracurricular activities after school (my own children do as well), but this is when TIME MANAGEMENT comes into play.  Many activities that are due, are activities that they are able to work on in class.  If they’re goofing around and doing other things, then that’s where they’re not managing their time wisely.  Please discuss this with them.

***Please have your child practice their multiplication facts nightly if they do not know them.  You can make them flashcards with the facts that they don’t know.  Knowing their multiplication facts is very, very important in 4th grade and it’s frustrating for them when they’re getting problems wrong because they don’t know their facts and they’re spending too much time searching for it on their multiplication table.
***Please make sure that you are returning progress reports and/or deficiency notices signed.  (Missing #5, 14, 15, 18, 23, 29)

Do not send students with more than $10 to spend in the gift shop. Reminder that students are not allowed to purchase any snack items at the gift shop.

Tuesday, 9/17: Language Arts: Fluency passage; Study for vocabulary test; Your Turn pages due Friday; Writing: Study for grammar test; Journal prompts (2) and idiom due Friday; Math: Mid-chapter checkpoint (please do not assist or correct mistakes on your child’s paper…this will be used as a grade to see what they know on their own).  It is extremely important that your child learns their multiplication facts for memorization or they have tools to help them.  Students are getting their answers incorrect because they do not know their basic multiplication facts.  Students that do not know their facts will continue to struggle in math because a majority of the chapters in 4th grade require students to know their facts. Students will not be able to use multiplication charts on tests.  The facts that students do not know are typically 6’s, 7’s, and 8’s.  Make flashcards only of the facts that are not known and have them practice each night.  They will only get better if they practice.
