A mayor is the leader of a city or community. Today we realized that we didn’t know who the mayor of our city is! Our challenge tonight is to find out the name of our mayor. It is worth extra social studies credit! For the most credit, find out the names of all our city council members.
Here is a link to help you get started: http://www.elkgrovecity.org/ Remember that we are studying “Government”!
*****Edited to tell Mrs. Rutherford’s class to list 5 city services that the city of Elk Grove provides.

I will try to publish homework each night, but often time prevents me from doing this. You will want to check your child’s homework calendar in his/her binder each night to confirm homework with him/her. Tonight they need to show you their blue folder (from here on known as the Friday folder) and they need to bring it back tomorrow. They also must have you fill out the information sheet. If you cannot find it, here it is: Information Sheet
I will discuss Friday folders, weekly updates, and homework at Thursday on Back to School night!

I’ve had some blog problems when posting from home, but keep checking this week for updates. I hope your child had a great first day of school! Blog information and permission slips will be handed out at Back to School Night this Thursday, August 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the MP room, and 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. in our classroom.

Today in class we looked at a video made by Mr. Alfonso’s 5th grade class in our district. It reminded us of how to prepare for and take the CST next month. I’ve embedded it here because so many students enjoyed it and wanted to see it again!

Today we were looking at atlases and almanacs. I am looking for an almanac to share with the students, so if you have one, please send it in so we can take a peek!
Otherwise, we looked at the online Farmer’s Almanac. You can visit the online site at:
There is also a kid’s almanac site (where you can order the almanac for kids as well as play some games and solve some puzzles):

Our school is taking part in the Osh Kosh Cranes for Kids program, to support the Japanese youth who have been affected by the earthquake. Today we learned the difficult art of folding paper cranes! Here are the kids with their finished product (I am so impressed with how well they did).
I promised I would copy the directions for them tomorrow if they want to make more. Our school has a goal of 1,000 paper cranes to send to Osh Kosh. For those who want directions online, here are some links:

On Thursday we had a visit from the Mosquito Lady! She shared with us lots of information about how to avoid mosquitoes. She even gave us information about a contest they are having for calendar artwork. Visit her website at http://www.fightthebite.net/.
