2011-2012

  1. Math: We will be working from the book California Mathematics and I will also be supplementing with other materials as needed.  We will be working on computational skills as well as problem solving, critical and thinking skills.

Math Facts: tested through Rocket Math

  1. Language Arts: I will be using a variety of materials to teach reading and writing.  We will be working in small groups, independently and as a whole class, depending on the nature of the activity or lesson.  We will be working all year on spelling skills, grammar, reading comprehension, reading strategies and writing skills.

*Spelling: Spelling pretests are usually given on Mondays.  I assign spelling activities for classwork and homework throughout the week as practice (25 points).  The posttests are usually given on Fridays.

* Writing: Writing will be taught through, directed topics, journal responses, choice writing, Daily Oral Language, essays, stories, and response to literature.

* Reading: I will be using a variety of resources to teach reading strategies and comprehension skills.  We will be reading novels, poetry, and short stories.  I will be teaching whole class lessons as well as working with small groups.

  1. Social Studies: Our focus in fourth grade is California history.  We will also study geography throughout the year.

Science: All fifth grade students are testing on fourth and fifth grade standards on the CST test in the spring.  We will be covering important standards from these grade levels.

  1. Physical Education: We will focus on whole body conditioning as well as skill development.

  1. Homework: I assign homework Monday through Thursday.  Part of each night’s homework is a reading log that is filled out by your child.  Please save all work from the trimester.  If your child forgets his/her homework then they are required to make it up during recess.  Lunch Bunch prizes are given to students who turn in all of their homework in on time.

  1. Weekly Reports: Each week, on Wednesdays, I send home a newsletter/report that will update you on your child’s progress.   It needs to be reviewed by you, signed, and returned the following day (Thursday) with your child.

  1. Grading: I base grades upon class work assigned, homework, quizzes, tests, reports, projects, and observations.  I do not give a letter grade for every assignment.  Some assignments are for practice only, which I check off, and for which your child is still held accountable for completing.  I will also go over the grading procedures with the students.

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns, which you would like to discuss.   I will be happy to arrange a meeting or a phone call. You are always welcome to visit our classroom also J Thank you for attending Back to School Night!
