Report Cards/Conferences

Hello everyone,

There are some important dates that are coming up.  They were in the school-wide newsletter but I want to make sure you are aware of them.

Science Fair projects are due on February 28th-this is an optional project

There will be minimum days for conferences on March 2nd-9th.  Our days will be from 8:00-12:35.  If we have not asked you for a conference, we will send home your child’s report card on March 9th

On March 16th we will have a Crab Feed to benefit funding for the library.  We are able to go once a week this year because of the funding from last year’s Crab Feed.  Get your tickets now!

Reading-We are on our last story for the Imagination unit.  We have had fun learning about all the ways you can use your imagination.  A highlight of the unit was studying about Picasso and writing a summary of his work/life.  You will see them at Back to School Night. 🙂

Math-We have just finished the geometry unit.  We made geometry books to have the definitions and pictures handy of concepts such as right triangle, perimeter, volume, etc..  We will be learning how to do more complex division next.  It may be a little frustrating at first because it is a new concept. 🙂

Social Studies-We are studying the Native Americans that lived in California.  We are filling in graphics organizers with facts on their shelter, clothing, tools, and diet to help us with future writing.

Please let us know if you have any questions. 🙂

Welcome Back!

It was so great to see your children this week!  They are very enthusiastic learners. 🙂

Tomorrow your child will be bringing home a paper describing a social studies project that is due on January 18th.  It really is a fun project that you can work on together and show your creativity.  Please let me know if you have any questions after reading it. 🙂

Next week we will be sending home Making the Grade printouts with your child’s grades thus far this semester.  If he/she has earned a D or F, you will also receive a deficiency.  Please sign and return these papers.

Thank you for all of your support! 🙂

December

Your child should be bringing home a packet today.  On the back of the first page, is a calendar of December with suggested activities for each day.  The second page has a front and back.  On the front your child can keep track of the books he/she reads during this time.  On the back your child can keep track of multiplication and division practice.  The last two pages are ones that can be copied and filled in with multiplication numbers.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!  I will see your child back on January 3rd.  Thank you for all of your support! 🙂

Parent Conferences Start Tomorrow

Good morning, everyone.  Just wanted to remind you that parent conferences start tomorrow and continue through  next Friday, the 28th.  The children will come to school from 8:00-12:35 during those days.  We will eat lunch from 11:40-12:10.  Looking forward to meeting with you! 🙂

Folsom Zoo Thank you for returning the permission slips for the Folsom Zoo.  We will be going on November 1st.  We will be taking sack lunches with us to eat there.  If you want to get a lunch from the cafeteria, please have your child let me know so it can be ordered.

November 11th-Veterans’ Day Holiday

November 18th-minimum day 8:00-12:35

Please send in cans for Kids Can.

Mrs. Fassler,  friends, and my family will be feeding the hungry on October 30th.  Your family is welcome to join us, or you can send in items such as chapstick, gloves, socks, combs, or deodorant.  Thanks so much for your help!

Math-  I cannot emphasize enough the importance of your child learning his/her multiplication facts.  We are starting to do multiplication of higher numbers, the next unit is division, and then we will multiply 2 digits by one digit.  If he/she doesn’t know the facts, it will affect their success this year and for many years to come.

Reading– We read about a secret place in a city this week that had many different types of wildlife.  Your child wrote about what their secret place would be like using sensory adjectives.  Ask him/her about it! 🙂  Our vocabulary words are shallow, concrete, slopes, plumes, and wildnerness.

Writing– We have really been refining our skills at writing expository paragraphs.  Near Halloween, we are going to work on a narrative with a ghost, bat, or pumpkin as a main character.  This will be a fantasy, obviously.  At the end, we will frost their cookies and eat their main characters.  Should be motivating!

This and that

Your children are doing a great job in the friendship unit.  The tree house presentations were awesome!  I can tell you spent a lot of time with them on practicing their speech.  Hopefully they found out it wasn’t as scary as they thought it would be. 🙂  Kudos to Eddie and Sierra for memorizing their paragraph!

In conjunction with our selection this week, we have been discussing ways we can help people.  Mrs. Fassler and I will be going to feed hungry people next Sunday at 1:30.  We meet at my house, everyone brings something for the lunches, we assemble them, and then caravan down to Caesar Chavez park to distribute them.  If you are interested, please let me know.  Also, if you cannot accompany us but would like to provide soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, chapstick, etc.. that would be great.

In Social Studies we are studying the five types of geography.  We are making foldables with pictures to reinforce the definitions.  We have been practicing writing paragraphs with a lot of details that make the reader feel as though he/she was there.

Quiz your child on nouns, verbs, and pronouns.  He/she should know them. 🙂  Our next unit in math will be multiplication.  Flash cards are a great tool!

Tree House Project

Just a reminder that the tree house projects are due on September 15th.  Be creative 🙂  A great opportunity for your child to present his/her  wishes in front of the classroom.  Remember to practice before Thursday.  Thanks for your support.

What’s Up?

Progress reports/deficiencies were sent home today.  Please sign it and send it back with your child.

We have been learning about the Native American tribes that were originally in California.  Ask your child about them. 🙂

Please work with your child every night on multiplication and division flash cards until he/she knows them automatically.

We have a minimum day next Thursday, April 14th.  Enjoy the time off with your child! 🙂
