Monthly Curriculum Focus
FEBRUARY:
ELA: In reading, we are working in unit 4, Making a New Nation. It tells stories that explain how America became a nation. We are also reading a novel called Journey to Topaz. Students should be focusing on finding the main idea as well as details that support this idea. Our language focus is Greek and Latin roots - don’t be surprised if you hear your students start to use some silly words! In writing we are working on revising and editing as it applies to sentence combining using dependent/independent clauses, prepositional phrases and conjunctions.
Math: Chapter 8 is a hard one! Students will be adding, subtracting, mulitiplying and diving with fractions and mixed numbers. Check out my “Helping at Home” page for a great website that explains the concepts we are working on.
Science: Weather will be the topic of our science discussions. Watch the weather report with your students! We will then move on to Erosion, Plants, and the Human Body.
Social Studies: Students should be working on memorizing their states and capitals by region.
