Hello welcome to Book Club! Here we are reading, Rules. If you have that book you are just right on track.

The book of the author is called Cynthia Lord. She was inspired by her mom’s enthusiasm she gave her. She wanted to be a writer at age 4. Her first song went like this:

“Ding-dong, the cherries sing,
Tra-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Ding-dong, the cherries sing,
Tra-la-la-la-la DING, DING!”

            She wasn’t really good at doing poems, but she still kept trying. Maybe you should have her enthusiasm.

            Okay, now your task is to read Section 1( Pg 1-40) of Rules and to respond to us if you’d like. If you don’t know how, click on comments, and fill in the things you want to say. Be sure to write your name, too. Why you’re responding is because I am giving you this question: Catherine has to give rules to David. What would you give David as a rule?

Hello, welcome to Book Club again! Now that you have read Rules Section 1, I will summarize the part of the part you just read. Catherine has to go to operational therapy because her brother, David, has autism.When she was  there,  she saw a guy named Jason that is unablale to speak. Catherine was drawing Jason. When Jason’s mom saw what Catherine was doing she got angry. Later Catherine apologized, and she became friends with him when she gave Jason her picture of a house. That problem was solved but, troubles were not over for Catherine. She got a new neighbor but she was worried that the new neighbor would not like her. She was also scared and embarassed because she has an autistic brother. She didn’t know if the new neighbor would accept him.

Now that you have heard a summary of the first few pages, you can follow us by reading Rules Section 2(Pg  41-89). Like the first task you can read and comment on the following question. Here’s the question for Section 2: Why did Catherine lie to her mom saying the neighbors can’t come to the barbeque?

Welcome back! In pages 41-89, Catherine goes to the clinic, and she puts the communication cards that she made in Jason’s communication book. When she gets home, Catherine’s mom tells her they are having a BBQ. She told Catherine to go to their neighbor’s house and tell them that they can come to her house and enjoy it. Catherine lies by saying that they can’t come. She says this because David does not have very good manners and she does not want to be embarassed. After, she saw Kristi with Ryan talking. She didn’t want the two to be friends because she was concerned. She is concerned because Ryan is an enemy of David and she was jealous. After, Kristi calls Catherine to go to her house.

You are close to finishing! You just have 2 more sections to read! Today’s summary will be a short one. In pages 89-129 Catherine goes to Kristi’s house and Kristi tells her that Ryan might like her. When she goes home, she finds carrots brought by Jason. She fed them to her guinea pigs. She goes to the clinic and shows Jason her guinea pig.
Like last time, please respond back to the following question. Read section 4( pg 89 to 129) to keep up with the book. The question is: Where did Catherine run while pushing Jason in his wheelchair?

You’re very close to finishing the book. In the fourth section. Catherine asks Kristi to go for a swim in a near-by pond. But during the swim, they meet Ryan (a boy who was mean to David). Kristi asks Catherine to decorate for the community center dance and she agrees. When Jason sees Catherine he invites her to his birthday party. She wants to go but she is embarrased of her brother. At Jason’s party, Jason asks Catherine to the dance.  She is scared to be seen with Jason but doesn’t want to hurt his feelings. 

 Now  read and respond this question: Catherine goes to a party and play with people. If you have gone to a party, what do you do if you went in a party? Also, you have to read the last section(pg 170-200) and respond!

The book is finally over!!! In this section Jason asks Catherine to the dance. She was very embarrased but does not want to make Jason feel like she is scared to be seen with him. When Catherine calls Jason his mom said he’s too angry to go on the phone. Catherine told Jason’s mom that she will wait for Jason at the dance Catherine went to the dance and Jason came. At the dance she sees Kristi. Catherine introduced Kristi to Jason. Kristi was thinking that Catherine should not have been embarassed and will still be Catherine’s friend.
The last question is: What lesson would you learn during the part of the story at the dance?
