Composition Techniques

Rule of Thirds:

The rule of thirds is a technique used in photogrpahy that is based on the fact that the human eye is naturally drawn to a point two-thirds on a photograph. A 3×3 grid is often used when using this technique to locate where the thirds are. Using this technique, subjects are located around one of the intersection points. When taking landscape portraits, the horizon should be placed along one of the thirds.

Diagonal Rule:

The diagonal rule is a composition technique wherein the subject is placed diagonally from one corner to an opposite corner. It divides the photograph into two, and divided again so that it becomes three.

Leading Lines:

Leading lines are used to draw the viewer’s eye through a photograph. It draws to a focal point using intentional or unitentional, natural lines.
