The Flag – An Important Symbol of a Nation

A nation’s flag describes the history and the present day of the country in its colors and design. Our first assignment is to research the meaning behind the design of the flag of the countries we chose for our year-long reports.

The flag of Mexico(Spanish: Bandera de Mexico) is a vertical tricolor of green,white,and red with the national coat of arms charged in the center of the white stripe.The color greens symbolizes hope and prosperity.White represents peace and harmony.Red symbolizes the blood of Mexican heroes.The coat of arms has an eagle,holding a serpent in its beak and talon,is perched on top of a prickly pear cactus growing out of rocks in the middle of a lake.The current national flag was adopted on September 16,1968.The first national flag was officially decreed by Agustin de Iturbide in November 1821 and first officially used in July 1822.

  2. The Greece flag has nine horizontal blue and white stripes with equal width and length. It was adopted on December 22, 1978. The nine stripes are said to stand for the nine syllables of the Greek patriots’ motto: “Eleutheria e Thanatos”, or “Freedom or Death.” It is also said to stand for the nine Muses, goddesses of art and civilization.The blue and white on the flag stand for the Greek sea and sky combined with white clouds and waves. The white can also stand for the purity of the country’s struggle for independence and for freedom. The cross symbolizes Greek Orthodoxy, the religion of Greece. The Greece flag dates back to the Greek revolutionary war against the Ottoman Turks in the early 1800s. Over time, the shade of blue on the flag has changed from dark to light blue. All in all, the Greek flag is a very fitting flag that represents the country well.

  3. Jamaica’s flag was adopted on August 6, 1962 and the colors on the flag represent the nation of Jamaica. The design on the flag is a gold saltire on a green and black field. Jamaica’s flag was supposed to have horizontal stripes, but it was too similar to another flag. The flag’s colors are black, gold, and green. Black represents the strength and creativity of the people, gold represents the wealth and beauty of the sunlight, and green represents hope and agricultural resources.

  4. The Red Cross of the England flag stands for the cross of St. George. In the 1188 Henry the second or England and Philip the second of France agreed to go on a crusade and that Henry would use a white cross and Philip and the Red Cross. It is not clear at what point the the English king adopted the white cross and the French king the red one. There was a historiographical tradition claming that Richard the lion heart himself adopted both flags and the patron saint from
    Genoa at some point during his crusade.

    Korea made a great flag. The Korean Flag was adopted in January,27,1883. The Korean Flag was named Taegukgi or Taegeukgi. The Flag was used as Nation Flag and Ensign. The Korean Flag was used in 1945-1948. Korean flag means heaven, fire, earth, the red means yang, and the blue means yin.

    The Laos flag was adopted on December 2,1975. There is blue and red stripes with a white disc in the middle. The blue strip is twice the length of the red stripes. The red stripe stands for the blood shed for liberation. The blue stands for the Mekong river and prosperity. The white disc stands for the full moon against the Mekong river.All in all Laos is a great country to study.

    The India flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya and adopted in July 22 1947. After India became independent from great Britain. The flag has three colors and it is white, green, and the horizontal band of saffron the sign in the middle is called Ashoka Chakra.

    Next I am going to tell what the colors mean. First the green color means fertility growth of the land, white means peace and truth with Dharma Chakra, and the saffron means strength and courage of the country. The Chakra means eternal wheel of the law.Last reason about India is in India the flag is called Tiranga it is called that because it has three colors.

    I think there were unique facts about the India flag. Since I heard a lot of things about India now I want to go there I have never been there and when I go I will make sure I will have fun and learn more about India.

  9. Chile’s Facts

    Chile’s flag is a red, white and blue banner with a white star.The blue square in the canton region of the flag represents the sky, the white stripe represents the snow of the Andes mountains ,and the red symbolizes the blood that was spilled fighting for freedom.

    Chile flag was adopted in October 18, 1817. The national flag of Chile, consists of two unequal bands of white and blue square the same height as the white band in the canton ,which bears a white five-pointed star in the center. It was adopted on October 18,1817.

    The Iceland flag has many details. It has three colors to represent it. One color is blue that represents the ocean. Another color is white for the snow and the other one is red from its volcanoes. The modern flag is a red cross on white witch is on a blue base. The flag was founded on the year of 1918.

  11. The Argentina flag was adopted in February 12,1812. The flag is in a curious mix of revolutionary fighting for independence from Spain and Incan sun worship. The color of the flag has three horizontal bands, The top and bottom are light blue and the middle one is white. The blue stripes were placed on the flag by Manuel Belgrano, and are said to be symbolic to the sky above. The golden sun was with the sun of may, it was added 1818. The flag color and symbols are put in there for a reason, this is the best description Manuel Belgrano put on the Argentina flag.

The first field of the coat of arms was never specified in the Croatian constitution. The flag used Republic of Croatia colors, proportions 1:2.

    The Brazilian flag has a yellow diamond, green background, 27 white five-pointed stars, has the words ORDEM E PROGRESSO on it, and was adopted at November 15, 1889. The green background symbolizes Brazil’s lush fields and forests. The yellow diamond symbolizes the wealth in gold that Brazil has. The 27 white five-pointed stars represent each state and its Federal District. Also the stars are arranged in the same pattern as the night sky in Brazil. Finally the words ORDEM E PROGRESSO stand for ORDER AND PROGRESS. The colors and pictures all symbolize something that describes Brazil.

    The Guatemala flag colors are blue and white. The colors are blue and white because the land was located between the two oceans. They are Pacific Oceans,and Atlantic Oceans. Next, The white on the flag stands for peace and purity. The rifles
    stands after Spain crossed in September 15 1821. Guatemala defends itself by force if needed; a bay laurel crown. The bird in the middle of the flag represents liberty. The two swords on the flag are for representing honor.

  16. Today I will be telling you about Spain’s flag. Spain’s flag was adopted on December 1981 . The shield on Spain’s flag represents the royal seal. The flag’s colors are red and yellow because they are spanish traditional colors. Yellow also represents generosity. Red also represents bravery, strength, and hardiness.

    Morocco’s flag has a red background and a green star. The color red on the flag is Morocco’s dynasty. The color red and green are the traditional colors. The green was added as a pentangle on the center of the flag. The color red also represents it’s bravery,strength and valour. The flag was adopted on November 17, 1915. It’s seal of the solomon represents the link of god and the nation. Morocco got it’s independence from France on March 2, 1956. Morocco’s flag was designed in 1912. Morocco became a country on March 2, 1956. Morocco used lots of flags, but they mostly used the one they have now.

    The flag of U.A.E. was adopted on December 2, 1971. It was designed by Mr. Abdulla. White represents Peace and honesty. Red means Hardiness, Bravery, Strength and Courage. Green Stands for Hope, Joy, Love, and Optimism. Black is for defeat of Enemies or Strength of mind.

  20. The Flag – An Important Symbol of a Nation

    In 1901 Prime Minister the Rt Hon Sir Edmund Barton MP, decided to design a flag for the Commonwealth of Australia.
    Everyone celebrated september 3, 1996 ( flag day ) by displaying and flying the flag. That was the day it was first flown. ‘‘Below the Union Jack is a white Commonwealth or Federation star. It has seven points representing the unity of the six states and the territories of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The Southern Cross is shown on the fly of the flag in white.’’

    The flag to Australia is an expression of the Australian identity and pride.

    Italy’s flag was adopted on January 7, 1948.
    The first people to use the colors that are now on the Italian flag, was the Cispadane Republic in 1707.
    The flag means tricolor. It has green, white, and red.

    The green represents the country’s plains and the hills, the white represents the snow capped Alps, and the red represents the blood spilt in the wars of Italian Independence. But in more religious eyes the green means hope, the white means faith, and the red means charity.

    Italy has a lot of amazing sights and sounds and I hope I get a chance to visit Italy one day.

    Wu Xing Hong Qi is the name of the flag. The flag is also known as the Five-Star Red Flag. The flags history started with Zeng Liansong that was from Wenzhou, Zhejiang. Zeng was the person that designed the flag. The flag is a red field with a big star that has four stars that arc to the right of the star with a proportion of 2:3. The red is for the communist revolution and the stars are the unity of the Chinese people. The flag was adopted on September 27, 1949. The use of the flag is civil and also a state ensign. So the colors and designs will stay the same and represent China’s unity.

    The Fiji flag symbolizes a lot of things such as the pacific ocean. The Union Jack (upper left), is representative of the country’s long association with Great Britain. The flag’s blue field is symbolic of the surrounding Pacific Ocean. The coat of arms display a golden British lion holding a cocoa pod, as well as panels displaying a palm tree, sugar cane, bananas and dove of peace.
