TE is a dynamic, research-based educational services non-profit organization headquartered in Sacramento, California with a distinguished history of operating exemplary after-school tutoring programs in California, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. With an operating budget of approximately $2 million, the organization currently serves over 1,000 children daily by providing after-school programs that focus on academic achievement, character-building, health and wellness, and employable life skills.

TE was founded in 1994 by Keith Herron, the current President and Executive Director, whose life was dramatically influenced by ordinary men and women who took time to mentor, motivate, and inspire him in both the public education system and private sector. It is in this spirit of “paying it forward” that he established an organization whose primary mission is committed to making a difference in the lives of young people and ensuring that all children have the opportunity to mature into healthy, productive adults through positive experiences, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds.

TE has 15 years of demonstrated success with academic and career-building education. The motto of TE is “Quality Staff, Quality Instruction, Quality Results.” This commitment to excellence allows TE to create positive and proactive learning solutions that allows students and parents to enhance their academic and life skills. As a data-driven organization, TE programs have had great success in working with disadvantaged urban students, improving test scores, and changing students’ attitudes about planning for the future.

During the 2008-2009 school year, TE’s SES programs posted the highest test scores in the greater Sacramento region, gaining an average of 47 points on the Academic Performance Index (API) compared with the state-wide average 14 points. In the past five years, TE has dramatically increased student achievement in six low-achieving schools in which TE served over 40% of the student body. At the end of the program period, these schools exited “Program Improvement” status.  The success of TE is attributed to its instructional methodology which incorporates six major factors that directly correlate to academic success: self-esteem, hours of study, future plans, individualized study programs, parental involvement and presence of a role model.

TE operates a myriad of successful after school programs in the greater Sacramento area, including After School Education and Safety (ASES) Programs, Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Tutoring Programs, Career Counseling Programs (Linked Learning), Service Learning Programs, and other intervention programs, such as the City of Sacramento Summer Reading Program.

In addition to having an experienced and well-connected Board of Directors, TE has an experienced and dynamic leadership staff. Keith Herron, P.E., M.B.A., the President and Executive Director, has been at the helm of the organization since its inception in 1994. Click here for more information about Target Excellence
