Operation Gratitude: Halloween Give-Back Campaign

Teaching children the value of giving back by donating Halloween candy in support of Operation Gratitude is a win-win for kids, parents, and dentists. This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters will join kids across the country when they donate their extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude.

The sweet treats will be included along with handwritten thank you letters in Care Packages sent to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas, and hand delivered to Veterans and First Responders serving in their local communities.

“Operation Gratitude’s mission is to thank all who serve, forging strong bonds between grateful Americans and the Heroes who serve and protect them,” according to Kevin Schmiegel, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and CEO of Operation Gratitude. “The Halloween Candy Give-Back Program provides every American child the opportunity to learn about service, sacrifice and generosity.”

Candy will be collected in Mrs. Shirey’s room from November 1 through November 5th. Please do not buy candy specifically for this purpose. We want the children/families to donate leftover candy and/or from that which they received while Trick or Treating.

For those who do not celebrate Halloween, we will have a table at the Harvest Festival (October 18th) for Franklin students and families to write cards and handwritten thank you letters for deployed Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders.

Digital Citizenship Week – October 14-18

The week of October 14-18 is Digital Citizenship Week. We know that student learning is always expanded when schools and families work together. We encourage families to make digital citizenship discussions a priority during #DigCitWeek 2019. This might be a great week, for instance, to commit to device-free dinners. For resources and information on this annual event, please check out a recent post on the District’s Digital Citizenship website: Digital Citizenship 2019 – So Many Possibilities.

You’re Invited to EXPLORE: Map Your Future – Sept. 26 | 5 – 7PM

What will your student be when he or she grows up? Has your child had the opportunity to see a wide variety of the future career options that are available to him or her? Did you know that the Elk Grove Unified School District offers many career-themed academies and pathways? Here’s your chance to find answers to these questions!

Students in 4th through 9th grades are invited to attend EXPLORE: Map Your Future, a family-friendly BBQ event to explore career academy and pathway programs (food is available while supplies last). This school year, Map Your Future will take place on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Elk Grove Regional Park’s Pavilion Center, 9950 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA 95624, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Guests may arrive at any time during the two-hour window.

Also, attendees may reserve a spot on a District school bus if transportation is needed (at least one family member must ride with the student on the bus). The school bus will arrive at the event by 5:00 p.m. and will depart at the conclusion of the event at approximately 7:00 p.m. If interested, please sign up for the bus service by visiting: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdKm2L9dA0XbJoqj3YReJ-xMyQPeITxemDRPGoJYmX_w7mQIQ/viewform?c=0&w=1
