When students leave this programs, they are truly prepared for both college and career. Digital Communications provides the skills necessary to gain employment or to pursue advanced study.

Course instruction is enhanced through mentoring and internships. Articulated post secondary credits are available.

Technology & Digital Arts Academy (TDAA)

• The Technology and Digital Arts Academy (TDA) provides students with two distinct career technical education paths: Computer Graphics and Digital Photography. These pathways prepare students for careers in the media industry, freelance photography industry or graphic arts industry.

• In the Academy, the students have the opportunity to pursue and be exposed to a variety of disciplines including computer graphics, graphic design, digital photo, digital filmmaking, media arts, photography and digital photo illustration as well as the solid core high school classes.

• The Computer Graphics program will provide an in-depth view into the multi-media design field. Students receive a broad overview of computer software programs through an exciting range of courses starting in their freshman year. Students gain practical knowledge in creating logos, posters, packaging design, multimedia presentations, magazine layout and infographics. In their junior and senior year, students expand their knowledge by taking two college credit courses through Sacramento City College offered at Elk Grove High School.

• The Digital Photography program prepares students for a variety of opportunities in the ever-changing digital world. Students receive a broad overview of computer software programs through an exciting range of courses starting in their freshman year. Students gain practical knowledge in composition, subject treatment, interaction of light and shadow, photojournalism, creativity, image editing software and output. It also introduces the aesthetic and technical theories and techniques of photography. In their junior and senior year, students expand their knowledge by taking two college credit courses through Sacramento State University offered at Elk Grove High School.

Music and Audio Pathway

Learning the skills and knowledge for creating, refining and sharing work in the Arts, Media and Entertainment industry sector promotes teamwork, communication, creative thinking and decision-making abilities—traits that are necessary to function successfully in the competitive and media-rich 21st century. Through the manipulation of sight, sound, and motion, those choosing a pathway from this sector reach out in unique ways to enhance the quality of life for those around them.

New technologies are also constantly reshaping the boundaries and skill sets of many arts career pathways. Consequently, core arts-sector occupations demand constantly varying combinations of artistic imagination, metaphoric representation, symbolic connections and technical skills. Successful career preparation involves both broad and in- depth academic and technical preparation as well as the cultivation of 21st-century skill assets, such as flexibility, problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills.

Franklin High School

Animation & Digital Media Arts Pathways

These four-year pathways in animation and digital media production allow students the opportunity to learn and participate in all aspects of graphic communications such as animation including editing, camera work, script-writing, storyboarding, video production, producing and directing using the school’s television studio and industry grade equipment.

Students work with high-end technology in a hands-on, fully functional television studio, use industry-standard editing software and have the opportunity to experience how the profession works. After completing core introductory classes, students will select one area of study for their mastery coursework. Students have the choice of going in depth into the art and craft of animation or digital media production. Students will receive a high quality education in the digital media fields as well as developing the highly transferable skills of communication, collaboration and problem-solving. When students leave these programs, they are truly prepared for both college and career. Each specialist area provides the skills necessary to gain employment or to pursue advanced study.

School of Technology, Engineering, and Media (STEM) — STEM is a unique program that allows students to focus on one of four areas of study:

  • Computer Specialist — Computer Specialists incorporate a standards-based/mastery approach that allows students to accelerate learning as they demonstrate mastery of each curricular standard.
  • Engineering Specialist — Engineering Specialists complete mastery courses in Computer Assisted Drafting and Engineering.
  • Media Specialist — The Media Specialist program prepares students for career paths in the field of media communications behind, and/or in front of the camera.
  • Generalist — Students interested in all three major areas of STEM can choose the Generalist strand. Mastery of this strand is obtained by completing coursework in the three specialist areas.

After completing core introductory classes, students will select one area of study for their mastery coursework. Each specialist area provides the skills necessary to gain employment or to pursue advanced study. Course instruction is enhanced through mentoring and internships.

The mission of the Digital Media Academy is to produce industry-ready students who will use digital media to persuade, entertain, and inform. Students will become digital media artisans who communicate and collaborate to solve problems and to increase their awareness of themselves and the world around them. The academy’s rigorous and relevant curriculum allows students to integrate elements from multiple content areas and to explore the ways digital media enhances and enriches their education. Ultimately, students will have developed skills specific to the arts, media, and entertainment industry to successfully enter the workforce or a post-secondary program upon graduation.
