We will have a docent led Nature Hike beginning at 10:00.  Please wear appropriate clothing for hiking and the weather. There are “Porta-Potties” but no place to wash hands, so you may want to bring your own hand sanitizer/wipes.

Solar Eclipse August 21

Parents Can Help Remind Students to Never Look Directly at the Sun

ELK GROVE, Calif. – August 16, 2017 – On Monday, August 21, people from around the world plan to visit the United States to witness the total solar eclipse. Local and national news agencies have raised awareness of this once in a lifetime experience and have drawn attention to the eye protection needed for safe viewing. The Sacramento area will experience a 76% eclipse, with the Moon beginning to cover the Sun at 9:02 a.m., reaching maximum coverage at 10:17 a.m., and then moving away from the Sun at 11:39 a.m.

Elk Grove Unified places student safety first. All students will be reminded that they should never look directly at or stare at the sun. We realize that some students may be curious and we ask that parents reinforce the same safety message that one should never look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. Parents may also request in writing to have their child opt out of participating in a planned activity.

Given the solar eclipse offers unique, and valuable educational opportunities, a variety of learning activities have been planned. Steps are being taken by staff to conduct these activities in a safe manner. If parents have questions regarding the specifics of these activities, they should contact their child’s school.

Below is some information developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) parents may find useful.

In our never-ending search to find free/ low cost activities to activate brain activity, fun and learning we have stumbled upon quite the find.  Right off of Elk Grove Florin Rd we found Gifts from the Heart of Elk Grove.  It’s a small little shop owned by an amazing former teacher who has collected the most amazing books, activities, knick-knacks and fun!  Best of all she has classes.  Oodles and oodles of fun classes to learn and explore.  So, attached is a list of fun activities for you to sign up for if you’d like and a few announcements you should know.  Next month, we plan on participating in the Earth Day Art contest.  Head to the store and grab a free tile.  On the 20th we will meet at Feickert to create your art masterpiece out of reused/ recycled items. More info as the date gets closer.  For now take a look at the list and grab a tile from the store.  Honestly, it’s a great little shop to browse.  Have fun!
