The State of California has developed an online assessment called the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). It assesses all 3rd-12th grade students on Math and ELA (English Language Arts- Reading, Writing, Grammar, Punctuation, etc…) proficiency.
Our testing window will be in April. Exact dates will be sent out as soon as we have them.
In order to help prepare each student for this exam, we highly recommend that you spend some time each week (example: 30 minutes each Tuesday and 30 minutes each Thursday?) going over the Training and Practice tests for your specific grade level.
You may want to print the following out (it came from the State and they love lengthy instructions. The only thing they forgot was to have us do the Hokey Pokey )
To access the practice site go to: http://www.smarterbalanced.org/practice-test/
Click on box with green letters that say:Take The Practice Training Tests (middle of page)
Next page: Click on little green box with bike at the bottom.
On the next page, find the large red trike. Click there for “California Students”.
On the next page, click box that says “Sign In” (you do not need to fill in any of the fields since you are there as a “guest”)
Next Page: Is This You? Choose your grade level and then click “Yes”
A page with”Your Tests” will appear.
Click the “Training” tests in Math or ELA before moving onto “Practice” or “Performance Tasks”.
After you have clicked on your selection, the new page will show “Choose Settings”. Leave them as is, and click “Select”
Next Page: Scroll down and click on “Start My Test”
Alas, the test does not start quite yet. Before doing the “Training” test, be sure to read over the “Overview of Student Test site and Test Tools” by clicking on this “blue” link. The “Tools” part will be especially helpful. You may even want to “print screen” of the tools and how to use them during the test. ( For the “Practice” and “Performance Task” click on Begin Test Now.)
Once you have looked over “Tools” click on box “Begin Test Now”.
Using the tools, notepads, etc…answer each question as best you can. You move to next question by clicking on the arrow in the upper left hand corner.
Practice makes perfect!
