DONNER NEWS:

May 23rd - (Thursday)School Library & Computer Lab OPENOur school’s library is open on Thursdays after school from 2:30-3:30PM.  Students on and off track can check out and return books.  AR Testing and First in Math support are also available during this time in the Computer Lab.
May 24th - (Friday)READ-A-THON SPIRIT RALLYJoin us in the quad at 8:30AM as Mr. Jackson and Mrs. Jenkins are turned into human NACHOS!  That’s right it is time for the AR Nacho rally to celebrate all of the awesome reading our students have done throughout the year and during our school Read-A-Thon. 
COMMUNITY SPEAKER SERIES Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 6:30PM at the Laguna Creek HS TheaterJoin us for the 2nd in a series of FREE events for our parents the evening of May 29th. Dr. Robert MacKenzie and Lisa Stanzione, who will discuss their best selling books, “Setting Limits” and “Setting Limits with Your Strong

Our school will remain on a year-round 4 track calendar.  With declining enrollment, it will be necessary to make some involuntary track changes.  These track changes will be instituted based on registration date and time.  Although we do not like to make involuntary track changes, it is required so that we are able to

May 13th- (Monday)CST TESTING CONTINUES FOR ALL 2ND -6TH GRADERS ON TRACKS A & B”Please help your child to do their best by ensuring a good night’s sleep and they arrive to school on time.  Students who are late will not be allowed into the classroom until the testing session for that day is completed.  Missed tests will have to be taken as a make-up.
 
Evidence suggests that students who eat a good breakfast perform better on the tests.  Students in 2nd -6th grades on Tracks A & B who eat breakfast at school for the next week will be entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes.  That’s right, eat breakfast at school during the last testing week and be entered to win!

May 15th (Wednesday)– “LAST DAY TO FOR FIRST IN MATH – TRACK D”– This is the last day for Track D students to earn First in Math stickers to attend the First in Math Movie & Pop Corn party on Friday.  Students reaching the below goals will be invited to attend.

FAMILY FITNESS NIGHT & GENERAL PTA MEETING – @ 5:15PM Join us for our Annual Family Fitness Night and PTA General Meeting.  Beginning at 5:15PM in our school’s MP Room for an evening of Karate.  Our very own John McClean owner of Adapt Martial Arts will lead our families through fun karate moves.  Don’t miss out on being a part of our school’s PTA and keeping fit at the same time.  Healthy refreshments will be served.  (See attached flyer for information on the next karate session) Martial Arts Academy (.pdf)

Track and teacher assignments will be available on Thursday, June 27, 2013 after 4:00PM.  Track change request forms for the 2013-14 school year are being accepted.  These requests are honored based on space availability on a particular track and by date/time in the order received.   
 
Summer Office Hours:
Our office will close at 2:30PM on June 27th
Our office will be open July 8th – July 12th from 9:00am to 3:00pm
Regular office hours will resume beginning July 15th (7:30am – 4:00pm)

This is the time of year that our children get to show off many of the outstanding projects they have worked on and some of our classes provide interactive demonstrations to show what they have learned. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity.

FREE FRIDAY KARATE ACADEMY – This Friday we will once again be offering our after school Karate Academy. The academy is FREE this Friday only. Our next paid 5 week session begins Friday, May 17th. STAFF APPRECIATON WEEK AT ELITHA DONNER ELEMENTARY

APRIL 29TH – MAY 3RD

Join us in showing our awesome teachers, yard supervisors, office staff, custodians, food service staff, para-educators and bus drivers how much we appreciate all they do for our kids! We will be honoring Donner staff throughout the week with treats and surprises. This is a great time to have your child write a “Thank You” note or make a special treat for those that have helped them at school this year.

April 30th – (Tuesday) –“BOOK SWAP” / TRACK C- All C Track students are encouraged to participate in the Donner Book Swap this Thursday. Students will have the opportunity to look for a book during their lunch recess. All students can participate even if they did not bring in a book to swap. We ask that “Book Swap” books be returned to the school office when children are no longer interested in reading them.

(We are continually accepting books for the book swap. Please bring in any new or gently used books that your child no longer reads or is interested in. This allows us to provide other children with new and exciting books to read and your child benefits from finding a new book as well. Each track will participate in the book swap the Thursday before they track off.)

Donation sheets have been sent home in the Communication Folders All money earned goes to offsetting the transportation cost of our 6th grade field trip to Sly Park. Money earned by all 5th graders is directly credited to their Sly Park account for next year’s trip. Because of the combined effort of ALL of our students, the cost for the Sly Park trip has remained the same for the past 5 years! Happy Jogging!!!!

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME WITH EGUSD! – Come on out to the ballgame to support service learning students and EGUSD athletics!

The Elk Grove Unified School District has partnered with the Sacramento River Cats to present EGUSD Night/Service Learning Night at the River Cats vs. Las Vegas 51s game on Friday, May 3 at 7:05 p.m.

Service Learning Night recognizes the students and schools who have participated in EGUSD’s Service Learning program over the past year. Students who have completed service learning hours (no minimum on this number) will receive ONE free ticket to the game and additional guests have the option to purchase additional tickets to the game. Schools participating in the district’s service learning program will be recognized during the pre-game and on the matrix board at the stadium. During the 7th inning stretch, 10 service learning students have been selected to help lead the crowd in a rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

The EGUSD Night at the River Cats game is a fundraiser to benefit EGUSD athletics programs. The John Reith Elementary School Marching All-Stars will also accompany the performance of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch.

Tickets are available at the Assembly ($15) and Home Run Hill ($10) levels. They can be purchased either online or with a flyer to be sent home with students. A total of $2 from each ticket sold will go towards EGUSD athletics programs. The last day to purchase tickets to the game online is Thursday, May 2. Unused tickets can be exchanged for any Sunday-Thursday Sacramento River Cats game during the 2013 season. LAGUNA CREEK HIGH SCHOOL BAND TO HOLD E-WASTE RECYCLING FUNDRAISER

Help the Laguna Creek High School Band raise money to repair their well-used instruments by bringing your e-waste and shredding to the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 20, 2013. E-waste will be collected by All-Green Electronic Recycling. Documents will also be shredded on site from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. by Shred-It for a donation of $10 for two banker’s boxes. Additionally, household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and 9 volt) will be accepted for a small donation.

Items accepted include: televisions, computer monitors, flat screens (all sizes), PCs, CPUs, printers (all sizes), cell phones, PDAs, telephones, modems. Laptop computers, servers, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, boom boxes, game consoles, cables, wires, power chargers, microwaves, ink and toner cartridges, and anything that plugs in or uses batteries. No household appliances will be accepted.

RUNNIN’ FOR RHETT – Parents, family members, friends and supporters are welcome to run with us. Sign up for the race on the Change of Pace website. www.changeofpace.com. Registration is $12 until March 19th and $14 after that. For an additional $5 you can order a t-shirt. You will have the option of ordering a Capitol City Classic or a Runnin For Rhett Youth Fitness Shirt.

Come out on race day to cheer on all our runners or join the race and run with us!

April 10TH – (Wednesday) – CONCERNED AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENTS (CAAP) Parent University Night @ 5:30PM / MP Room – Parents are invited to join us this Wednesday for an informative presentation on the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Parents will receive information on grade level specific standards, state testing, and more.

April 11TH – (Thursday) – “School Library & Computer Lab OPEN” – Our school’s library is open on Thursdays after school from 2:30-3:30PM. Students on and off track can check out and return books. AR Testing and First in Math support are also available during this time in the Computer Lab.

6th ANNUAL DOLPHIN DASH FOR TRACKS A & B is MAY 3rd – Mark your calendars and get your training schedules ready, it’s time once again for our 6th Annual Dolphin Dash Jog-a-thon. Look for additional information and donation sheets coming home soon. All money earned goes to offsetting the transportation cost of our 6th grade field trip to Sly Park. Money earned by all 5th graders is directly credited to their Sly Park account for next year’s trip. Because of the combined effort of ALL of our students, the cost for the Sly Park trip has remained the same for the past 5 years!

 

Donner News: Week of April 1-6

The CAAP Academy meets every Monday and is open to ALL students. Students must be picked up by a parent or guardian until permission forms have been completed.

April 3rd – (Wednesday) – 6th ANNUAL DOLPHIN DASH – FOR TRACKS C & D – Don’t forget your running shoes and be ready to run on Wednesday morning for the jog-a-thon.

April 4th – (Thursday) – “BOOK SWAP” / TRACK B- All B Track students are encouraged to participate in the Donner Book Swap this Thursday. Students will have the opportunity to look for a book during their lunch recess. All students can participate even if they did not bring in a book to swap. We ask that “Book Swap” books be returned to the school office when children are no longer interested in reading them.

(We are continually accepting books for the book swap. Please bring in any new or gently used books that your child no longer reads or is interested in. This allows us to provide other children with new and exciting books to read and your child benefits from finding a new book as well. Each track will participate in the book swap the Thursday before they track off.)

Kindergarteners are on the AM schedule 7:40-11:11am.

CHARITY DRIVE FOR WIND YOUTH SERVICES – Collection ends this Friday, April 5th. WIND Youth Services has received donations from us for 4 years now, and they are so, very appreciative. This organization does amazing things for kids that have unimaginable situations that have led them to being homeless.

Some of the items needed as donations during this time of year are: gift cards for groceries and food items, any other useful gift cards or monetary donations, NEW hygiene items like, deodorant, soaps, body wash, shampoo, etc.; light weight clothing; new pajamas- all youth to adult sizes; blankets and bedding; and any of the items listed on their “Wish List” which is posted in your child’s classroom! Please turn in all items to your child’s teacher by this Friday, April 5th.

ADAPT MARTIAL ARTS EXTENDED TRAINING ACADEMY – Adapt Martial Arts will be offering an extended training academy for the next 5 weeks for only $40. (See attached flyer for more details) Martial Arts Academy (.pdf)

CALIFORNIA STATE TESTING – It is the time of year for our awesome students to “Show What They know”

CST testing begins for Tracks C & D 2nd through 6th grades on Monday, April 8th and will continue through April 19TH. Please ensure that your 2nd through 6th grade student attends school each day and is on time. Students, who are late, will remain in the office until their class has completed testing for that day. They will then be given the test as a “make up” at a later time.

Breakfast is served! Students, who eat breakfast at school during these two weeks, will receive a ticket to enter into a drawing for great prizes. Students eating breakfast at home will have the opportunity for a snack in the morning before testing begins.

 March 20th – (Wednesday) – “NATIONAL ELEMENTARY HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION CEREMONY” – Join us at 5:30PM in the MP Room as we celebrate the amazing accomplishments of all of our NEHS students.  These 5th & 6th grade students have completed all the requirements to be inducted or to continue as members of the National Elementary Honor Society.

PTA MOVIE NIGHT   Elitha Donner PTA, along with The Popcorn Store, presents our 3rd and final movie night of the school year.  Come and watch “Wreck It Ralph” for FREE! Doors open at 5:30PM, and the movie begins at 6:00PM. ALL DONNER GEAR 50% OFF AT THIS EVENT

RUNNIN’ FOR RHETT – Our school’s newest after school academy for 5th & 6th grade students is sponsored by Runnin’ for Rhett.  Participants will spend the next 5 weeks preparing for a 2.62 “mini” marathon during the Capital City Classic in Downtown Sacramento on April 21st.  Look for the sign up information coming home with your child.  All students participating in the 5 week program and running the race will be automatically signed up.
