March 3rd (Monday) “ANNUAL READ-A-THON” TRACKS A, B, & C – Celebrating Read Across America Day – Monday, March 3rd for Tracks A, B, & C.  (See the attached flyer to find out what is going to happen to Mrs. Jenkins and Mr. Jackson if we reach our school wide point’s goal.)Read-a-thon flyer 2014 (.pdf)

March 4th (Tuesday) “AR TEST TAKING” Our school’s LIBRARY is open for ALL students (whether on or off track) to take AR tests from 2:00-3:00PM.  No Library services are available during this time.

March 5th (Wednesday) “BOOK SWAP – TRACK A – All  A Track students are encouraged to participate in the Donner Book Swap this Wednesday. Students will have the opportunity to look for a book during their lunch recess.  All students can participate even if they did not bring in a book to swap.  We ask that “Book Swap” books be returned to the school office when children are no longer interested in reading them. 

(We are continually accepting books for the book swap.  Please bring in any new or gently used books that your child no longer reads or is interested in.  This allows us to provide other children with new and exciting books to read and your child benefits from finding a new book as well.  Each track will participate in the book swap the Thursday before they track off.)

March 6th (Thursday)  Track Change Minimum Day

Kindergarteners are on the AM schedule 7:40-11:11am.

1st – 6th grade students are dismissed at 12:40pm.

March 7th (Friday) – WELCOME BACK TRACK D –School resumes for all D Track students this FRIDAY.

“SPIRIT WEAR DAY” – This Friday is a spirit wear day!  Have you been noticing some new Donner Spirit Wear being worn on Fridays?  That’s right there are some new styles on campus.  If you would like to purchase new spirit wear, order forms are available in the office.  The spirit wear race is closer than ever this year.  Help your class win the week’s spirit contest by wearing your spirit wear or Donner colors this Friday.

PTA MOVIE NIGHT & GENERAL MEETING

Elitha Donner PTA Movie Night & General Meeting is right around the corner!  Join us Friday, March 7th for a “delicious” good time as we “devour” this month’s featured film….. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Part 2″.  The Donner multipurpose room doors will open at 5:30pm and voting will take place for Donner PTA Executive Board member positions for 2014-2015.  The movie will start at 6:00pm, so bring your blankets & pillows and enjoy an evening out! movie night poster for 3-7-14 (.pdf)

The PTA will have hotdogs, pizza, drinks, popcorn and candy for purchase. We will also have prizes to be raffled off throughout the evening.

“BRING YOUR FAMILY TO LUNCH DAY” FOR TRACKS C & D / WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12TH – You and your family are invited to join your child at school for their lunch and lunch recess. Enjoy lunch with your child and their friends and see what your child enjoys doing at recess! SCIENCE FAIR AND INVENTION CONVENTION – Looking for something for the kids to do over their break?  How about starting a science fair project or creating a new invention.  This year’s school site science fair and invention convention takes place on Thursday, March 13, 2014.  First place winners and all inventions will advance to the district science fair and invention convention to be held March 27th -28th.  All students on an accelerated contract are encouraged to participate.  (Packets are available from your child’s teacher or in office.)

 

DONNER NEWS – Week of 2/24-2/28

“HAVE BREAKFAST WITH SHAPE-A-ROO!”

Breakfast gives you the energy to start the day.  A healthy breakfast is important for everyone, especially children.  Students who eat breakfast:

  • Do better in school.
  • Perform better with increased attention span and memory.
  • Miss fewer days of school and are late less often.
  • Have improved behavior and attitude.
  • Get the nutrients they need to grow and develop.

To encourage students to eat breakfast and start the day right, SHAPE-A-Roo, Food & Nutrition Services’ mascot, is having breakfast at your school on Thursday, February 27th.  Please encourage students to come have breakfast at school that day.  Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:55 and costs $1.50.  Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can also receive breakfast at no cost.

“ELITHA DONNER ES NIGHT @ UC DAVIS BASKETBALL GAME”  Donner game night is this THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2014.  All Elitha Donner students have received a FREE voucher to attend Donner’s Game night at UC Davis. when the AGGIES take on CAL POLY at 7:00 PM at the PAVILION.

While at the game, pay close attention to the video boards as our school will be recognized for participation in this year’s reading program.  In addition, Donner students will have the opportunity to line up around the court prior to the game for player introductions (starting lineups).  We hope to see you there! February 28th (Friday) “SPIRIT RALLY” Join us this Friday for our first spirit rally of 2014! Let’s wake up our Donner spirit and find out all of the exciting things happening in March.  Due to inclement weather we will be having two rallies in the MP Room.  8:15-8:50 Primary / 9:00-9:35 Intermediate.

EGUSD Board of Education seeks Finance Committee members

The Elk Grove Unified Board of Education (EGUSD) would like to invite interested applicants to serve in one of three open positions on the Board’s advisory Finance Committee.

“We welcome community involvement in our District and appreciate the dedication of those individuals who take an opportunity to serve in this area of public education,” said EGUSD Board President Priscilla S. Cox.

The function of the Finance Committee is to serve in an advisory capacity to the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees on matters pertaining to District finances. The Committee provides community input that is shared with the Board of Education. It is comprised of community members appointed by each Board member and the Superintendent and three community members appointed by the entire Board of Education. Finance Committee Members serve two-year terms.

The Committee is assisted by non-voting district staff members including the Associate Superintendent of Finance and School Support, Director of Fiscal Services and other staff as needed. Student representatives from the District’s high schools provide feedback on financial impact at their school sites.

The functions of the Finance Committee are to:

  • review the annual budget and interim financial reports and comment when deemed necessary;
  • provide opinions on current fiscal strategies for the district;
  • identify potential fiscal problems and refer them to the Board of Education for analysis;
  • provide an annual written report of the committee’s activities to the Board;
  • provide any oral presentations to the BOE at the Board’s request or at the committee’s initiative; and
  • serve as an ad hoc resource or provide specific  research or study as requested by the Board.

Applicants must live within the District’s 320 square mile boundary and be 18-years-old or over.

Red Ribbon Week

October 28th (Monday) – “DON’T SWEAT DRUGS” WEAR A SWEAT SHIRT. The classes with most students wearing a sweatshirt will be the day’s spirit winner. Help your class be the week’s overall winner. 

October 29th (Tuesday) – “THE POWER OF PINK” WEAR ANYTHING PINK.  The classes with most students wearing something pink will be the day’s spirit winner.  Help your class be the week’s overall winner. 

 “AR TEST TAKING” Our school’s LIBRARY is open for ALL students (whether on or off track) to take AR tests from 1:30-3:00PM.  No Library services are available during this time.

 October 30th (Wednesday) – “YES I CAN BE DRUG FREE” BRING IN A CAN OF FOOD. The classes with most students who bring in at least 1 can of food for the Kids Can Food drive will be the day’s spirit winner.  Help your class be the week’s overall winner.  Students are encouraged to bring in as many cans as possible.  All additional cans will be counted for the Kids Can class contests. “Red Ribbon Week – Drugs are Junk Free Throw & Poetry Contest”

EGUSD encourages students to “Map Your Future”

Parents and students will have an opportunity to map a path to college and careers at the Elk Grove Unified School District’s first annual Map Your Future: K-12 Career Pathways Exposition from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8 at Monterey Trail High School.  The event is offered through a partnership between EGUSD, Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and Elk Grove Economic Development Corporation.

The event will feature 14 of California’s industry sectors, which include agriculture and natural resources, energy environment and utilities, engineering and architecture, health science and medical technology, information and communication technologies, and manufacturing and product development.  These industries have been identified by Elk Grove and Sacramento leaders as having the greatest potential for growth. 

 At the event, current and former EGUSD career academy and pathway students will be available to speak with and answer questions from students and parents.  Teachers, counselors and school and district administrators also will be on hand to answer questions and offer guidance on applying for an EGUSD academy or pathway.  Representatives from post-secondary educational institutions also will be available to provide information about how EGUSD’s career academies and pathways connect with college and business partners will be on hand to offer insight into the local labor market.

 Thanks to a generous donation from the City of Elk Grove, the first 500 participants will receive $3 vouchers to use at food trucks that will be at the event. 

 

Donner News: Week of September 30-October 4

October 2nd (Wednesday) – “WALK TO SCHOOL DAY” -  In an effort to promote environmental awareness, as well as physical fitness, we are asking our students to either ride their bikes or walk to school this day. As always, in an effort to promote safety, we ask that students who choose to ride their bikes wear an approved safety helmet and follow all safety rules; and all walkers walk with a friend or family member and only cross streets at designated areas.  Better yet, join one of the walking school buses.

 All Donner students will receive FREE Breakfast between 7:30-7:55AM

Come shop at the Farmer’s Market – Fresh produce will be on sale at a reduced price.

A “Walk to School” spirit rally will take place at 8:15AM in the quad.  The Harriett Eddy Middle School Band and Elitha Donner’s own Spirit and Student Unity Rally Team featuring Splash our school Mascot will help to kick off the morning’s events.

Then join us from 8:50 – 11:00AM for our “Health and Safety Fair” organized by staff and parents with the help of local businesses. The fair will feature a rotation schedule of stations emphasizing exercise, healthy eating safety, community awareness, and environmental awareness:

  • Zumba
  • Martial Arts
  • Elk Grove Unified Police Services and CSD Fire Safety
  • EGUSD Food and  Nutrition Services

 THANK YOU FROM YOUR PTA!- The PTA would like to send a very warm Thank You to all of the Elitha Donner families and staff for their awesome support!  It has been great seeing and meeting a lot of you on campus and at our recent fundraising events.  Hopefully you had a fun time at the Ice Cream Social two weeks ago.  We sure did!  Our Donner Dinner this past Monday at Chipotle was a huge success, bringing in over $500 to support our school’s assemblies. 

 Another fundraising campaign we are participating in is the GiveWith.Target program.  With each on-line vote, our school will receive $1.  These funds can be used for much needed school supplies for our classrooms.  Simply go to GiveWith.Target.com and submit your vote for Elitha Donner Elementary.  To participate in this campaign you must have a Facebook account, and can vote multiple times.  (See the attached flyer for more information)

 EGUSD ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN IS BACK – It’s a new school year– and that means it’s once again time to kick off the Attendance Campaign!  If you come to school every day in September, you are eligible to win a free admission pass to Fairytale Town or free tokens from Chuck E. Cheese’s.  And don’t forget about the Perfect Attendance Bike Giveaway!  It’s back for an 8th amazing year.  For each month of perfect attendance, elementary school students will earn an entry into a drawing for a brand new bike and helmet at the end of the school year.  It’s that easy!  So keep coming to school – and it could be you spending a day at Fairytale Town or Chuck E.  WALK TO SCHOOL DAY – Walk to School Day is coming Wednesday, October 2nd.

We are in need of volunteers to help set up and take down the decorations, supervise event areas, walk with the students, or come and enjoy the presentations with your child. We can use your help the day before Walk to School Day or the day of the event. If you are interested please email Mr. Jackson at [email protected]  or call the school at 683-3073.  It’s a great day to volunteer!

 Want to help but are unable to do so at the event donations of ½ pint water bottles store bought muffins or donuts and whole fruit, such as bananas, grapes, oranges, etc. would be much appreciated Donations can be dropped off at the office any time before the event.
