Last Day in Second Grade – THANK YOU!!!!

Monday, February 1st is my first day of retirement. As much as I’m looking forward to taking care of my grandchildren, I’m going to miss teaching at Sunrise. I feel fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work with our C track second graders over the past five years. I enjoyed getting to know our wonderful Sunrise families, and watching each student as they mastered new skills. Our second-graders never failed to amaze me with what they learned, and what they are capable of doing.  As I go forward, I treasure the time spent at Sunrise and I look forward to my new experiences and adventures with my own family. Thank you everyone for your help, support, and the many special memories.

Last Drop-Off Day of 2020 – Next…. 2021!

We are almost ready to go off for C tracks’ long winter break.  While we are off, please help your child continue to practice math skills we’ve been learning in class. Students should also continue to read and write daily. A diary is a fun way for students to record their thoughts and practice their writing skills.

We will have our last drop-off day for 2020 on Tuesday, December 22nd. Please drop off:

  • Any books we’ve completed during small group reading time.
  • 2 Weekend News
  • Chapter 6 math test – Pages 329-332 (Make sure they answer every question.)

We’ll have a pick-up day when we return to school. We come back to distance learning on Tuesday, January 26th, and we’ll have our pick-up day on Wednesday, January 27th. You can choose to drop off the books and papers on January 27th if that’s easier for you.

I feel fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work with our C track second graders this year.  Our students come to school with enthusiasm and a desire to learn. They brighten each day in this strange time of distance learning.  The world is topsy turvy because of Covid 19, but once we are on Zoom and together, we are in second grade.  There is joy, riddles/jokes, frustration, learning, and laughter in being together.  It is wonderful to hear second grade perspectives and enjoy watching each student as they master new skills.  I hope you all have a pleasant and healthy time off together.  Happy Holidays!

Final Pick-up/Drop-off Day of the Year!

Wednesday December 9th, was our last pick-up/drop-off day for the 2020 school year. Please make sure the following completed papers are returned to school for grading:

  • Go Math Chapter 5 Test – pages 273-276
  • Go Math Mid-Chapter 6 Checkpoint Quiz Pages 299-300
  • TWO -Weekend News paragraphs
  • 1 paragraph about what you are thankful for
  • 1 paragraph about wild weather
  • Please return any books that we’ve completed reading during our small group time.

Make sure you look over any pages that are being returned. Help your student proofread his/her writing. The content of the paragraphs should be the student’s, however, it’s time to focus on spelling and punctuation. Make sure papers are neatly written and illustrated. Help them correct any spelling mistakes and punctuation issues. Look for run on sentences and fragments, and help your student correct them as well. When we are in class together I’m able to individually meet with each student and help them edit his/her writing. It’s not possible to do this during distance learning. Thank you for your help!

Your child’s folder has more fun Christmas activities and new writing pages. I also included a gift from me to your student. I value each of our second graders. I feel fortunate that I get to work with each of them daily.

Thank you for ALL of your help and support!

Welcome Back! October News…

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful break! Our second grade students seemed rested and ready to learn this morning. It was great to see everyone back in our Zoom classroom.

Wednesday, October 7th, will be our next drop-off/pick-up day. Our class tub will be outside of the school office. If Wednesday does not work you can come by any other day this week. Our janitors bring our class tub out at 7:30 a.m. and bring it back into the school office at about 5:00 p.m. each day. Inside the tub you’ll find an envelope for your child with supplies. I also have a stack of new book orders. Feel free to take one if you’re interested in ordering books for your second grader from Scholastic. You can place your order online using the Scholastic link on my class blog.

Please take your child’s folder with supplies they’ll need for the next two weeks. Each folder has our Family heritage project, supplies for our spooky story, additional writing pages, and our next fluency assessment. Please keep ALL of the supplies in your child’s school work area. The folder you drop off should have your student’s completed Mid-Chapter 3 math test (Page 144), a weekly news and an off-track news paragraph, and a paragraph about how animals survive.  Can you also return any Junie B. Jones and Flat Stanley books and packets that you might still have?

Second grade has settled into a routine for distance learning, so hopefully it’s getting easier for everyone. You can check your student’s progress by looking in our Google Classroom and by logging into your ParentVUE portal to check your student’s grades. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you again for all of your help and support!

Welcome to Second Grade!

Welcome to second grade!  Second grade is an exciting time.  This year is even more exciting as we all learn new skills to help us safely connect and learn from a distance. Each student will finish this school year with a multitude of new skills and information.  By the end of second grade your child will grow from a beginning reader to a student who fluently reads over 100 words per minute and is able to answer questions and make inferences using a wide variety of texts. He/she will be writing complete paragraphs using complex sentences.  Math is another area of amazing growth! Students will master three digit regrouping,  beginning algebra, geometry, and measurement.  These core skills will be enriched with our study of science and social studies as we learn about the world around us. Your second grader will lay a strong foundation in all academic areas from which to build on as he/she progresses through elementary, middle, high school, and college.

Prepare yourself for a fun year.  Ask your child what they learn about each day in class.  Share their excitement!  Log onto this blog to practice skills taught in class, access resources to further enrich your child’s education, learn about upcoming events, and see what new information we uncover each week!
