California’s Common Core State Standards (CCSS) do not replace California’s current science standards. The CCSS for Science supplements current science content standards. In Science, CCSS will assist students in their interpretation of science texts, gathering evidence and writing strategies. For example, Common Core’s Reading Standards for Informational Text describe skills that students will learn so they are able to evaluate information and data from varying sources. Science teachers will use concepts from CCSS to help students to express their growing knowledge of science in ways that are logical and demonstrate scientific reasoning.
